Top of Suches
Little Cabin In The
Big Woods
The
cabin has 2 bedrooms and one bath and comfortably accommodates four
people. Maximum allowed in the cabin is four unless other arrangements
are made.
The kitchen is completely equipped, all you need to bring is your
food. Enjoy our porch and deck with gas Bar-B-Q and rocking chairs.
For your convenience the cabin has a washer and dryer, please bring
your detergent.
You may find it chilly at night. It is usually 10-20 degrees cooler
here in the North Georgia Mountains than in Atlanta. The cabin has
central heat/air. There is a rock fireplace for a romantic fire. Firewood
is on the porch and fire starter is in the kindling basket next to
the fireplace. (Firewood provided for 1 night during winter months.
More firewood can be purchased at the Suches General Store.)
What
To Do:
Trout fishing in Cooper Creek, Toccoa River, and Rock Creek is excellent.
Cooper Creek is one mile north on Hwy. 60, turn right at Cooper Creek
Store and follow road. The Toccoa River back toward Suches approx.
1/2 mile, where the road is close to the highway can be real good
fishing as it is stocked regularly with rainbow trout. Rock Creek
is just a little further North on Hwy. 60. Turn left on Rock Creek
Road and go approximately 6 miles. The creek runs parallel to the
gravel road. The Chattahoochee National Fish Hatchery is on Rock Creek
Road and is open for tours. See how they hatch baby trout from eggs
and the different stages the trout go through before they are released
into the mountain streams. You can obtain a fishing license from the
Suches General Store or Cooper Creek Store. You can buy a 1 day, 7
day or a years fishing license. Ask Dale at Suches General Store for
prices on license. Suches General Store telephone number is (1-706-747-2271).
There are plenty of good
opportunities to take a hike. The property the cabin is situated on
adjoins the Chattahoochee National Forest and the Coopers Creek Wildlife
Management Area. Be very careful not to get lost in the National Forest
behind the cabin as the cabin property adjoins tens of thousands of
pristine National Forest acres. White tailed deer, turkey, black bear,
foxes, rabbits, bobcats and the like are frequently seen from the
property and in the National Forest. It is truly a wildlife paradise.
An even more challenging climb is to the top of Blood Mountain; highest
point on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia. Drive to the trail head
at Lake Winfield Scott off GA Hwy. 180 . (The Appalachian Trail also
crosses Hwy. 60 at Woody Gap) There are forest service maps on the
wall in the bedroom, and a book on hiking trails in Georgia.
Swimming is available
at Lake Winfield Scott, or Lake Vogel (south to Suches and East on
GA 180). Lake Winfield Scott is said to be the best kept secret in
North Georgia. Both are parks and offer other facilities including
nature trails, hiking, canoeing, picnicking, paddle boats (Only at
Vogel).
The Toccoa River is great
for tubing, rafting, and canoeing. You can put rafts and tubes in
the river, at the intersection of GA 60 and Cooper Creek Road, just
about 1/2 mile south on GA 60. There are several take out points,
one being the Deep Hole Recreation Area. That is approximately a 4
hour trip. You will need to bring your tubes, rafts, and canoes. Bicycling
in this area is very good and has become very popular. Traffic is
fairly light and most motorist courteous. It is hilly, so be patient
and don't expect to set speed records. Running is excellent both north
and south along GA 60.
You may want to take books,
magazines, games, and cards for evening activities. (If you have the
energy left)

Television/V.C.R./Telephone
Information:
There is a color television with a VCR. There is no television
reception at the cabin. The only thing you will see on our television
is the VCR tapes you bring with you. The cabin does have a telephone.
There is a block on the telephone for long distance calls. You will
need to use a credit card or calling card to make these calls. Some
cellular phones (Verizon) will work at the cabin and throughout most
of the valley, but not all. Most beepers do have reception in this
mountain region.
Groceries:
Plan your meals and take what you require with you as there are no
large grocery stores in the immediate area. There are a few small
stores that have milk, bread, soft drinks, ice, etc. in the Suches
Area. Cooper Creek store is approximately 2.2 miles North on GA 60
from the cabin driveway. Suches General Store is in Suches at the
intersection of Hwy. 60 & Hwy. 180 approximately 7 miles South
from the cabin driveway. This is your largest store and has the most
variety. Dale Pierce is the local proprietor and is there most of
the time and he knows about all there is to know about Suches. Blairsville,
Blue Ridge, and Dahlonega have large grocery stores with lots of selections.
The Super Wal-Mart in Dahlonega on the way up from Atlanta is a good
place to stop and get supplies. The store is open 24 hours a day and
is approximately 24 miles from the cabin. If you wish to purchase
beer or wine, you will need to do this in Dahlonega or Blue Ridge.
Restaurants:
Toccoa River restaurant is approx. a 35 minute drive from the cabin
and offers excellent entrees and a great salad bar. Look for their
brochure in the cabin. From the cabin, turn right on GA Hwy. 60 and
go approx. 8 miles and turn left on Dial Road. Go approximately 2
miles and turn left on Newport Road (you will see Vanzants Store on
the left) Go approx. 1 mile on Newport and turn Right on Aska Road.
Follow Aska Rd. approx. 5 miles and look for restaurant on the Right.
Directions:
An easy two hour drive from the Atlanta Area. From Atlanta
go North on GA 400/19 to the end. Turn left on GA 60 (also US 19).
Follow GA 60 north, you can bypass the historic section of Dahlonega
by turning right at the light (in front of KFC). Nine miles north
Hwy. 60 & 19 split -- follow GA 60 North past the the "R" Ranch
entrance and Stone Pile. Continue North on GA 60 over Woody Gap Mountain
and through Suches. The cabin is 8 miles North of Suches. Turn Right
on Rocky Top Mountain Road (which is gravel). The climb up the gravel
road is a little steep. The cabin is at the top of the mountain. You
will see Wildcat Lane on the left and the cabin is located right on
the corner.
